Every year on December 12, millions of pilgrims converge on the Guadalupe Basilica on the outskirts of Mexico City to celebrate the Fiesta for the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron Saint of Mexico. The faithful carry candles, flowers, and statues or framed depictions of the Virgin. Many people make the final arduous approach to the shrine on their knees in order to thank her for answered prayers or to request additional miracles.
Ten prints from my series The Virgin of Guadalupe will be on display in the 2018 Pacific Northwest Photography Viewing Drawers at the Blue Sky Gallery. These photos document events that I witnessed on three separate journeys to the Fiesta in December of 2013, 2014 and 2016.
The exhibition was juried by Hamidah Glasgow, the Executive Director and Curator at The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado. The opening reception will be on Thursday April 5, 2018, from 6-9 pm as part of the Portland Photo Month, and the exhibition will be on display through March 2019.
The Blue Sky Gallery is open Tuesday-Sunday from 12-5 PM and on First Thursdays 6-9 PM, and is located at located at 122 NW 8th Avenue, Portland, OR 97209.
